After having finished Business in the Bible, I wanted to shoot for the moon and pursue traditional publishing.
Traditional Publishing Route
I heard it is difficult for a first time author to land with a publisher, but I wanted to give it a shot and see if I could do it before going alternative channels. So I created a query and proposal, identified agents and sent them my books selling points.
I contacted 56 agents and received declines from 10 of them with nothing from the rest. Most agents advise you to wait up to 3 months for a response if they are interested. And that’s if they are interested.
Self-Publishing Benefits
After a few months of soliciting agents with very little interest, I took some serious thought and decided to pursue self-publishing, which has the following benefits:
- Publish on your own timeline
- More control of your product
- Higher royalties
The downside, of course, is you do not have the network and resources of a publisher and there will be up front costs of time and/or money to design, edit and format your book. I was not sure I wanted to go this route until i found out how many authors have been successful with self-publishing. I had just finished a few great books and had no idea they were self-published.
So I thought to myself, if they could do it, so could I. And the journey to self-publishing begins. In the next post I will break down the tools I used to design my self-published book, Business in the Bible.
Self-Publishing Tools
I began to use the following tools to support my self-publishing endeavor:
- Reedsy: Book Design
- Amazon: Self-Publishing platform
Reedsy has a great tool that allows you to formate and design the flow of the book. From there you can directly export it and your cover to a publishing platform like Amazon. And that’s what I did. More to come!
