Morning Empowerment: How to Lead Yourself

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” – Jack Welch

Eric Thomas left Huntsville, Alabama with a vision and a little faith. He had found success already at Oakwood University, where he got married as a college student, obtained a degree after twelve years and set up a program to help underprivileged youth. He was well known and, for someone who spent two years of his life homeless in the streets of Detroit, he had achieved so much already.

Still, Eric felt a calling to go to Michigan and do some growing. Reluctantly, his wife joined him and they started over. Eric took a job at the University of Michigan worked as an academic advisor to disadvantaged students while getting his Masters degree. Eric recalls his time at MSU as a season of personal growth. As he sought this growth, a team of loyal friends, and longtime future friends, were attracted to him.

Today, Eric has a PHD from MSU and serves as a pastor. Aside form this, he is a household name. Eric Thomas is the number one motivational speaker in the world. Reflecting on his past, he became a leader by working on himself first while at MSU. His personal growth was attractive and inspired others to join his mission to reach and empower others. And those team members would work with for Eric the next twenty years until he did become a household name, all while growing in their own craft.

True Leadership

No genuine leader would ask of others what he himself or she herself would not do. Eric challenged himself to personal growth while he waiting for destiny to do its work. His discipline and intensity were attractive to others and that was enough for them to become followers. As their relationship developed and business grew, so did those under Eric’s leadership.

To be a leader, seek growth.

Today, seize those opportunities for your personal growth. Focus less on followers and more on being the absolute best your name you know to be.

The rest takes care of itself.
