You probably have never heard of Chuck Feeney, and he wanted it that way. Chuck was an Irish American entrepreneur, co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers (DFS), who amassed a massive fortune from his business. Except you could hardly tell. He didn’t have a luxury car or watch and never really showed off his wealth. He lived in a rented apartment and wore a Casio watch. He had other plans with his billions.

Chuck founded Atlantic Philanthropies, which became one of the world’s largest private charitable donations. For years, Mr. Feeney secretly gave away his fortune, donating more than $8 billion in his lifetime.

Clearly, he found more satisfaction giving away his fortune than owning it. In this example of extreme generosity,

Chuck knew what many of us have yet to find out, that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

His Why was never to accumulate for himself, but to change the world through generosity.
