Morning Empowerment: A Lesson in Leadership

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” — Lao Tzu

Polished Stones

Once, in an interview, Steve Jobs was asked how he led a team to successfully build the Mac. When he asked how he motivated them, he stated that he simply built the team and used a metaphor from his childhood experience of witnessing a rock being polished overnight.

The team, incredibly talented people, are bumping up against each other, having arguments all the time. Working together, they polish each other and the ideas and what comes out are beautifully created stones. It’s certainly not the result of one person. I mean people like symbol, and I’m the symbol of certain things, but in the end, it was a team effort on the Mac.”

Certainly, without Steve’s guidance there would be no Mac or Apple brand, but in his fortune and fame, he could not accept credit for what his team accomplished.
