Morning Empowerment: Cherish the Competition

“Competition is a rude yet effective teacher. It exposes your flaws faster than your friends ever will.”

Big Fish

The company that I started my career out of college was awesome! I got great opportunities, including a rotation program, my first management role, and real on the job leadership and operations  experience. I began to observe that this smaller organization had a smaller talent pool than the other great places I would go.

When it was time to leave and spread my wings with new opportunities, my eyes were opened. In my new organization, twice the size of my previous, I was surrounded by top talent, systems and leadership. While I was growing and tremendously and being challenged in new areas, I was not as distinguished as before. And then I asked myself, what is my preference:

To be a big fish in a small pond, or a small fish in a big pond.

In that season, because I was growing and developing more in the large pond, I was in the right place. The competition was healthy and made me better.

Go Compete

If you truly want to grow, value competition. It is not fun being second or third, but you grow absolute talent that you can then export to new markets!

Value the competition!
