Morning Empowerment: Surviving Difficult Seasons

“In this world you will have many trials, But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

My Rough Patch

He slammed his fist against the wall next to us. Then I tackled him to the ground. His friends watched with shock and then ran off. We scuffled for a while until his back hit the wall. Then we reset and he grabbed a lamp with plans to hit me with it. Suddenly, he changed his mind and ran off.

This was the lowest point of my young adult life. I had just gotten into a fight with my college roommate, and it would cost me months of dealing with student conduct and anxiety. I was right in my anger for the choices he was making, but wrong in how I executed the resolution. The fight was totally avoidable, and, I, outnumbered, could’ve gotten badly hurt that day.

The following months would become a very low season of soul searching.

Then I found my soul mate…I met my future wife through a friend while going through this tough season. She immediately became my best friend and I was in a brand new season of growth.

God was with me. On the heels of the valley he sent me a mountain. Guess what. He will do the same with you. You just have to make it through this season.

While You Wait

One step at a time, one day at a time, one wise choice at a time. What I learned is that breakthroughs are not only the result of making many smart choices. Sometimes breakthroughs come from just showing up every day. Even when it sucks.

Show up to work. Don’t call in sick.

Show up to the hard conversation with your spouse. Don’t go silent.

Show up to the gym. Don’t listen to those feelings.

None of these are magical moments. But consistently showing up in a tough season is magical.

Keep your head up.

Show up.
