Morning Empowerment: The Poison of Pride

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18

1 Truth

Examples are plentiful:

  • Lucifer’s Fall from Grace: Once a high-ranking angel, but eventually discontent and wanted to be higher than God. He found himself instantly cast out of heaven and an enemy of God.
  • Lance Armstrong: Once known as a cycling legend, with seven consecutive Tour de France wins, only to be stripped of every accolade after he was finally proven to be using performance enhancement drugs.
  • The Titanic: Touted as the  “Unsinkable Ship,” it was designed with overconfidence and lacked safety measures. In parallel, those responsible for the travel ignored warnings about the icebergs. The catastrophic result is widely known.

Pride never ends well.

I once witnessed a high level leader in the workplace continue ignore every warning of his more experienced team. Each correction, suggestion and feedback should have been a blessing and opportunity to steer the ship towards success. Instead, this leader took each input personally and seemingly did the opposite of what was suggested just to prove a point. Unfortunately, every project was a failure, either behind schedule or ineffective. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of end for this person’s career and leadership.

Do you welcome the input of your team? Why do you truly want to make the decision you seek to move forward with? Is this more about you than the outcome you seek?

Search within, and search well. Put your pride to the side.
