The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. — Proverbs 21:5
A lever is a tool that allows for more productive results. When you pull a lever, it opens something bigger than you could open on your own. The output is magnitudes greater than the inputs. A short lever the size of your hand can open a large vault.
- A leveraged investment controls a larger amount of assets in proportion to the capital invested.
- You can leverage the expertise of a coach, accessing their expertise and resources to improve your position.
- A leader leverages the diverse team skills and background to accomplish the goals more efficiently.
Leverage is a universal concept that any level can make into a principle, a way of doing life. With it, you can accomplish huge goals. Jeff Bezos did not build Amazon on his own. He leveraged resources with skills, talents and expertise and over time, the company became the behemoth it is today. The same applies to Microsoft, Apple and Disney.
Anything requiring scale must be leveraged:
- A network of churches – requires systematic leverage to scale geographically
- A high-volume media company – requires content leverage to scale in channels and reach
- An international customer service organization – requires employee leverage to scale in service production
Leverage is largely the difference between entrepreneurship and self-employment. One serves and meets a need one by one; another builds a network for serving many efficiently. At the root of leverage is teamwork, recognizing that you do not have all the puzzle pieces and recruiting the required systems and talent into your circle.
As you think about your mission, where do you lack leverage? What can you do today to get the ball rolling on getting more out of what you are doing?
