If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all generously and without reproach and it will be given to him. — James 1:5
To get to the right solutions you must first ask the right questions. You are more likely to apply the wrong solutions when you don’t fully understand the problem. This is why in this age of technology and artificial intelligence, it is more critical than ever to use our human advantage — to make sense of things — as we apply additional data and technology to our lives.
Spend adequate time on the problem to understand the questions that need to be asked. This is the part that is often skipped. And then, finally, explore solutions. In the workplace and at home, we often jump straight to solutions:
- The team is unhappy so leadership holds an engagement event
- The child is irritable so we send him to his room
- Productivity is low so you hire more people
- No volunteers responded to the email so you do the work yourself
If you ask the right questions, you can establish more permanent solutions, allowing you to not fight the same problems repeatedly.
