Morning Empowerment: Utlizing Difficult Team Members

“Dealing with difficult people is not only a test of your leadership but a chance to grow your patience, empathy, and influence.” — Unknown

Dennis Rodman was known as a bad boy. He and the Detroit Pistons would bruise their opponents with aggressive physical tactics. He was known as someone that couldn’t be beaten tamed. But general manager Jerry Krause wanted him on his team. He needed a strong defender and supportive role for his two top players, Scottie Pippin and Michael Jordan. Indeed, the Chicago Bulls would be on a new trajectory.

Rodman’s elite rebounding, defensive mastery and basketball IQ was just the addition the team needed to be strong against agressive teams like the Pistons and the Knicks at the time. Some worried that he couldn’t be tamed, but what he needed instead, was to be on a team with a strict focus on winning and accountability. Rodman did his part.

Dennis Rodman would be instrumental to the Bulls win 3 NBA championships. Today, the 90s Bulls goes down in History as one of the best teams in the sport.

Jerry Krause and Head Coach Phil Jackson had taken what others had seen as a misfit and turned him into an integral part of the team’s success.

Optimize Your Team

As a leader, it is your job to ensure your teams are optimized. That means working as properly and effectively as possible. You will inevitably have a misfit of sorts – what others may call a problem child – but do not write him or her off. Perhaps they have special skills that could be better used to bring the team forward. Most importantly, do they have the heart and team spirit? If they do, work with their skills and build them into the team’s needs.

Utilize your team’s superpowers.
