“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”
— William Faulkner
For decades, the 4-minute mile was an impossible feat. Doctors, coaches, scientists and other experts believed it was not possible for a human to accomplish a mile distance in less than four minutes. They did not believe the body could handle it and claimed that the heart and lungs would fail if the mind did not first surrender.
A young British Medical student named Roger Banister believed otherwise. He did not believe the limit was a physical challenge, but one of mentality. He trained during his lunch breaks and intended to prove the 4 minute mile was in-fact possible.
On May 6, 1954 in Oxford, England he sat out on his attempt on a cold, windy day with 3,000 spectators gathered. With two friends pacing the first few laps ahead of him, Banister charged ahead for the final lap. The crowd screamed as he pushed to the absolute limit. When he finally crossed the finish line, he collapsed to the ground, fully spent. His time? 3:59.4.
Since Banister’s feat, thousands of athletes have officially run a mile in under 4 minutes.
When Impossible Is Achieved
It happened with the four-minute mile, the double backflip in motocross and next-day delivery. Once someone achieves what many thought was impossible, the floodgates open and others follow.
What work are you doing that seems impossible? Is it impossible or has it simply just not been done yet?
If everyone is saying it cannot be done, perhaps you are in a space with little competition and great opportunity. As the old saying goes, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”
Venture out and push the limits.
