Morning Empowerment: Marketing Yourself

“The best marketing doesn’t feel like marketing.” — Tom Fishburne

When we lived in California, my wife and I took our young daughter to the nearest Chik Fil-A, 45 minutes away. Having been used to having one just down the street, we had enough and it was time for her to experience this amazing place by herself. I will never forget the first time she tasted that chicken nugget. From there, she was hooked.

Can you remember the last time you saw a Chik Fil-A commercial? Neither can I. They don’t do much advertising because their marketing is cultural: service, quality and excellence. These values are weaved into everything they do, and as a result, you and I, and my family of 6 keep coming back.

Keep It Simple

Sometimes we overcomplicate marketing. We come up with detailed strategies and scripts….and all we need to do is stick to our values. Be authentic

When your work reflects who you are and your why, it attracts an audience and followers, and in that sense, seems is effortless.

In another sense, having the discipline to be yourself can be incredibly difficult. So here is your challenge:

  • Brainstorm your Why. Why are you starting a nonprofit? Why are you leading those volunteers? Why are you coaching that team? Make sure it is purposeful and larger than yourself. (For example, my Why is to empower the next generation of leaders).
  • Write that Why down on an index card , fold it up and put it in your wallet or purse. You will need it when things become unclear again.
  • And when it does, take it out and read it out loud. Then get back to business.

The best marketing is staying true to self and being bold enough to share it with others.
