Morning Empowerment: Why You Should Embrace Conflict

“Conflict is the beginning of consciousness.”
M. Esther Harding, American Physicist and Jungian Analyst

Culture of Conflict

”Our relationship is great! We never fight,” the newlyweds proudly told their older friends. The wiser, more experienced couple smiled to each other, and simply responded, “that is great, but conflict is healthy.” The young honeymooners let that moment pass without much thought.

My wife and I have been married 13 years, and I only recently began to understand the good health of conflict. When teams come together with the common goal of identifying the best solution to an issue, it is inevitable that they will have differences of opinions. But what a blessing! How troubled our world would be if we all thought the same!

We would drive the same car, work the same job and use the same, unchanging technology.

Conflict creates consciousness because it exposes alternate perspectives and better solutions. Further, it may expose some things about ourselves. Only the truly humble can embrace conflict objectively, seeking the truth and grasping it closely once it is found.

Conflict creates innovation in business, relationships, classrooms and ministries. The best teams know this. Therefore, the best teams have cultures that facilitate conflict.

Embracing Conflict

Does the word conflict sound negative to you? Usually, associated with tension, conflict in healthy teams is actually productive to progress.

Next time you have a difference of opinion, express it.

Next time someone expresses their difference of opinion, engage.

Seek to learn. Make things better.

Embrace Conflict.
