Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. — Colossians 3:2
As with any sport or workout, I learned that while cycling or weightlifting, you can create unnecessary tension by squeezing the handlebars or weight too hard, being tense in other areas of your body like your shoulders and neck or overworking the wrong muscles due to bad form. This bad form creates avoidable tension that causes inefficiency and premature fatigue. The best athletes have developed habits to avoid these issues, giving them higher output from the same effort and longevity for a lifetime.
In life, we also have tension that wears us down. This can be unhealthy relationships, habits or thinking. This tension ruins our game: we struggle at work, cannot focus during time with the children and we fail to use the gifts that give us purpose and significance. In the same way an athlete may overwork the wrong muscles due to bad form, we allow the wrong things to overwork us and it destroys our destinies.
How do you ease this tension? Fix your eyes on your Father, the heavenly things. Life is downright difficult; if you pay too much attention to your challenges, those issues become your focus. Instead, your power comes from God, who relaxes those tense muscles and gives you proper form for your journey.
What things in your life are causing you tension? Write them from and include them in your daily prayer plan.
